Et Tu Antibacterial Soap???

I can’t believe it — now even antibacterial soap may be unhealthy!

I stopped using it for the most part because of something I read about it killing “good” bacteria as well as the bad, but now I just read that it contains a chemical that may affect hormones! Check out this Huffington Post article about the FDA review of the safety of the antibacterial agent commonly used in soaps and toothpaste.

Yet another eye opener!

  1. I read recently that the average woman puts up to 500 chemicals on her body daily. I myself am working on zero toxins in my environment. I know I can’t get there but I’m working on getting as close as I can. I just finished with my makeup. I’m still working on household cleaners. I haven’t used antibacterial soap for a while. I have a list of toxic ingredients found in handcreams, toothpaste, shampoos, soap, etc… that really helps me. If I see any of these ingrediants I will not buy the products. Pretty much anything at the convenience stores like Walgreens, CVS, etc… is toxic. Even at Whole Food you really have to read ingredients.

BTW: I did get that Organic Orange TKO at the Green Festival (thanks for the ticket Julie) and I’m using that as a hand sanitizer. I also used it to clean the dashboard of my car, I was challenged because I couldn’t find a nontoxic product that made the dash look decent, it works great!

List of toxic ingredients to avoid:
Methyl- Propyl- Butyl- and Ethyl- Paraben
    Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Myreth Sulfate DEA, MEA, TEA
diethanolamine, monoethanolamine, triethanolmine, Cocamide DEA, Cocamide MEA, DEA-Cetyl Phosphate, DEA Oleth-3 Phosphate, Lauramide DEA, Linoleamide MEA, Myristamide DEA, Oleamide DEA, Stearamide MEA, TEA-Lauryl Sulfate
Synthetic Fragrance FD&C or D&C Colors Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) Propylene Glycol (PG)
Urea (Imidazolidinyl, Diazolidinyl) & DMDM Hydantoin
    Mineral Oil and Petrolatum Triclosan
    Quaternary Ammonium Compounds
stearalkonium chloride, benzalkonium chloride, centrimonium bromide, quatemium1-29, quatemiuml-15.

    • Thanks so much for the info, Elizabeth. We all need to check our purchases against this toxin list.

I love the Orange TKO cleaner and use it for everything in my home. I have used the green spray cleaner in the car, but I’ll try to Orange TKO and get the great smell while I’m at it!

  2. The only thing to remember is Orange isn’t good for cats. So be careful in the house cat lovers.

Also, I was in the restroom at work yesterday and noticed they use antibacterial soap. Today I have brought my own little soap to keep in my purse.

  3. my nurse friend says that regular soap and water is best, so long as you and your family uses good handwashing techniques. I wish I had a better solution for my hand towels. Paper towelling creates too much waste, our handtowels get yuckky too fast and I end up washing them so often. Any suggestions for that one?
