The eco-apartment has a really cool feature — many of the outlets are linked to a master switch that we can turn off when we leave for the day. Even electric appliances that are turned off will leach electricity as long as they are plugged into an active outlet. According to the government’s Energy Star program, “75% of the electricity used to power home electronics and appliances is consumed while the products are turned off.” Wow!
The master switch makes it easy to stop the energy leak throughout our eco-apartment, but you can stop the leaking in your home simply by unplugging infrequently used appliances. Don’t leave your toaster and blender plugged in all the time — just plug them in as needed. Why is your charger for your cell phone always plugged in? Just plug it in when you are actually charging! Same with your computer — unplug it when you are not using it. An easy way to turn off several things at once is to plug them all into a power strip and then turn the power strip off when you go out.
Let’s slay the energy vampires in our homes!
